Graceland Reimagined

Forty years after its release, Graceland remains one of the most distinctive albums in popular music: an unlikely meeting of Paul Simon’s American songwriting with South African township music, gospel, Zulu vocals, country, pop and rhythm and blues. On 18 September, the London African Gospel Choir brings its acclaimed Graceland Reimagined to Brighton Dome, revisiting the album through a full-band performance that puts its African musical influences firmly at the heart of the experience.

This is not, importantly, a Paul Simon concert — Simon does not appear — but an ambitious reinterpretation by a 23-strong ensemble of African singers, musicians and dancers. The choir has performed with artists including Emeli Sandé, Mumford & Sons and Annie Lennox, and its approach promises to transform Simon’s carefully constructed studio recordings into something more expansive, physical and communal.
