About the event
Forty years after Paul Simon’s Graceland brought together American songwriting with South African rhythms, gospel, township jive and a dazzling array of musical traditions, the album continues to provoke as much fascination as nostalgia. On 18 September, the London African Gospel Choir brings its acclaimed Graceland Reimagined to Brighton Dome, offering a new interpretation of one of the most influential albums of the 1980s.
This is emphatically not a Paul Simon concert — Simon does not appear — but a full-band performance by the 23-strong London African Gospel Choir, whose soaring harmonies, percussion and infectious energy promise to place the African musical influences of Graceland firmly centre stage. Familiar songs including You Can Call Me Al, Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes, Gumboots and Homeless will be transformed through the choir's distinctive gospel approach.
The anniversary also provides an opportunity to reconsider the complicated story behind the record. Recorded…
