About the event

More than a century after Fritz Lang's Metropolis first imagined a futuristic city divided between wealthy industrialists and an exploited workforce, the film remains one of cinema's great visions of modernity. On 12 September, The Old Market provides an appropriately atmospheric setting for an altogether different encounter with Lang's masterpiece, as Vox Lumiere transform the 1927 silent film into a live collision of cinema, theatre, rock concert and performance art.


Rather than simply screening Metropolis with a conventional piano or orchestral accompaniment, Vox Lumiere have created an entirely new musical and theatrical interpretation. Lang's original images remain at the centre of the experience, but they are accompanied by a live band, original music and powerful vocals, effectively turning the cinema screen into part of a much larger stage performance. The Old Market describes the production as a "rock concert, theatrical event, and cinematic journey rolled into one."
