For a few weeks each year, Brighton becomes a playground for performers, comedians, theatre-makers, musicians and creative risk-takers. Brighton Fringe is an open-access arts festival that invites artists and companies to bring their work to the city, creating a programme that ranges from polished productions and familiar comedy names to experimental theatre, cabaret, circus, spoken word, exhibitions and wonderfully unexpected performances.
Unlike a traditionally curated festival, the Fringe's open-access model gives a wide range of artists the opportunity to participate. This helps create its distinctive character: eclectic, unpredictable, independent-minded and full of surprises. Performances take place in theatres, pubs, clubs, galleries, community spaces and other venues across Brighton and Hove, often within easy walking distance of one another.
The result is a festival that rewards curiosity. You might plan an evening around a particular show, then find yourself discovering a new comedian, an intimate live performance or an ambitious piece of experimental theatre along the way.
Brighton Fringe is also an important part of the city's creative ecosystem, giving emerging artists opportunities to test new ideas and connect with audiences. For visitors, it is an invitation to step beyond the familiar and embrace Brighton's playful, irreverent approach to culture.
