Each autumn, CINECITY brings a world of cinema to Brighton, offering audiences the chance to discover films, filmmakers and screen-based art beyond the usual multiplex programme. Established in 2003, the Brighton Film Festival has developed a reputation for adventurous programming, bringing together international cinema, premieres, previews, archive discoveries and work that explores the boundaries of the moving image.
The programme extends well beyond conventional film screenings. Alongside features and documentaries, audiences may encounter artists' films, installations, live cinema, specially commissioned events, talks and screenings accompanied by live music. This broad approach reflects CINECITY's interest in the connections between cinema and other creative disciplines, including photography, visual art, literature, sound and digital culture.
For film lovers, the festival provides an opportunity to see work that might otherwise be difficult to find on local screens. For curious audiences, it opens a door to different perspectives, unfamiliar stories and new ways of thinking about cinema. Special events and discussions can also bring audiences closer to the ideas and people behind the films.
CINECITY feels particularly at home in Brighton, a city with a strong independent cultural identity and an appetite for experimentation. It offers a welcome alternative to predictable viewing, inviting audiences to explore world cinema, rediscover overlooked work and experience film as an art form capable of surprising, challenging and moving us.
